Climate Change & Ecosystem Management
Research to identify the effects of climate change, understand which communities, fisheries and aquaculture areas are most vulnerable, and improve the adaptive capacity of the fishing sector.

CEDO Intercultural is a bi-national non-profit working across the Northern Gulf of California and the Sonoran Desert. For over 45 years we have informed, inspired and empowered the communities of this region.
CEDO’s field station sits on the coast at Puerto Peñasco, with a view over the Gulf of California. Visitors are welcome six days a week.
There is no admission charge. Visitors who want to support the work leave a donation, and that is entirely up to you.
A free guided tour runs through the station and the exhibits. Ask at reception when you arrive.
The fin whale skeleton in the grounds is the thing most visitors remember. It is fully articulated and you can walk right up to it.
Who is CEDO
CEDO Intercultural is a unique collaboration between non-profit organizations in Mexico and the United States. Operating under a United Executive Committee and inspired by a vision, mission, and strategic programs, CEDO pools its resources and experiences to offer realistic environmental and community solutions that recognize, respect, and drive cultural, socio-economic, and biological interconnections between Mexico and the United States.
We are an environmental organization with a strong educational vocation, recognized for a holistic approach that drives nature-based solutions to protect, manage and restore the natural ecosystems that characterize this region.
Our programs
CEDO’s programs promote biodiversity conservation, fisheries co-management and community well-being. The solutions are scientific and community-based, and they recognize the cultural, socioeconomic and biological connections between local communities and their ecosystems.

Research to identify the effects of climate change, understand which communities, fisheries and aquaculture areas are most vulnerable, and improve the adaptive capacity of the fishing sector.

Consolidating trained and certified volunteer networks to monitor biodiversity, restore landscapes and protect priority species in the North and Upper Gulf of California.

Advising the regional and national fisheries sector so that a third of annual regional commercial production is produced and marketed under fisheries improvement and fair-trade certification models.

Strengthening communities in the Northern Gulf of California with the tools and practices that let them identify problems and self-manage solutions for the common good.

Environmental education and School of the Sea curricula, professional courses and competency certifications for children, youth, producers, local professionals and visitors.

MAC CEDO, a sister entity of CEDO Intercultural, runs a permanent volunteer program alongside social service placements and professional internships.
CEDO Xperiences
Guided, low-impact trips into the Sea of Cortez and the Gran Desierto de Altar, led by the people who study them. Every booking supports CEDO’s conservation and education work directly.

Paddle through calm estuary waters, birdwatch and enjoy the scenery. Includes a bird identification guide, and oysters afterwards.

Discover the natural tidepools of a certified beach, perfect for spotting marine invertebrates and shorebirds.

Explore a volcanic crater in the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, one of the thirteen wonders of Mexico.
A major long-term funder has shifted its priorities away from conservation in the Gulf. CEDO still holds the commitments and the programs, but is short of the operating funds that keep the doors open and the boats running.
